What to do when your wife and daughter want to do some shopping at Meadowhall?
Send up your drone for some aerial views, of course!
Meadowhall, Sheffield's premier shopping and leisure destination, is a vast and sprawling complex, and it can be difficult to get a sense of its scale and grandeur from the ground. But from the air, it's a truly breathtaking sight.
So, while my wife and daughter are busy browsing the shops, I thought, why not take a few minutes to yourself and enjoy some stunning aerial views of Meadowhall? You might be surprised at some of the things you see.
Here are a few lesser-known facts about Meadowhall that you might not have known:
- Meadowhall is the twelfth-largest shopping centre in the UK, with over 290 stores and 50 restaurants.
- It was built on the site of a former steelworks, and the foundations of the old blast furnaces can still be seen in some areas of the car park.
- Meadowhall has its own dedicated police station, which is one of the busiest in the UK.
- The centre has its own water supply, which is drawn from a borehole on the site.
- Meadowhall has over 3,400 solar panels on its roof, covering 60,000 sq. ft. and generating 770,000kWhs of solar energy a year, the equivalent to the electricity use of 230 homes.
But enough of the facts, let's get to the fun stuff!
Here are a few ideas for things to do with your drone while at Meadowhall:
- Fly over the central atrium and see the giant water feature from above.
- Take a look at the rooftop gardens, which are home to a variety of plants and flowers.
- Fly over the car park and see the thousands of cars parked below.
- Get a bird's-eye view of the solar panels and see how much clean energy they're generating.
- Fly over the cinema complex and see the latest movie posters.
If you're feeling creative, you could even try to film a short video of your drone flight and put it on social media. I'm sure your friends would be impressed!

It was a bit busy to do a lot of the things above, but still pretty good.
