Did you know why they call the area Chequerfields?

The Battle of Chequer Fields was fought on March 1, 1645, during the English Civil War, to relieve the siege of Pontefract Castle, which was being held by Royalist forces. The battle was a crushing defeat for the Parliamentarians, who suffered heavy casualties. The Royalists were able to maintain their grip on Pontefract Castle until March 1649, when it finally fell to the Parliamentarians after a long and arduous siege.
