(History)
Despite the lack of detailed historical records, local residents have shared snippets of information about Haw Hill Park in Normanton, West Yorkshire.
According to Paul Wormstone, the land for Haw Hill Park was purchased by Normanton Urban District Council in 1904 from the estate of Mrs Meynell Ingram, a local landowner who died that year. Swings and roundabouts, tennis courts, and a bowling green were added in the summer of 1905 at a cost of £59 5s 10d. The Normanton Free Library adjacent to the park opened in May 1907.
Colin Edan recalls that there was a rock part way down the hill that could be climbed into, and that the hill and rock were part of the defense hills built around Normanton.
Dean Morf Jackson says that the hill was part of an Iron Age barrow that went from the park to the M62 motorway. His grandmother also said that there were tunnels under the hill. The stone at the bottom of the hill used to be a cigarette machine that would vend one cigarette and a match.
While the full history of Haw Hill Park remains to be uncovered, these snippets of information provide a fascinating glimpse into its past. The park's long history and diverse uses make it a valuable asset to the community of Normanton.
I haven't found out much else about the history of the park. If you have any then please contact me.
Looking at the Side-by-side map website, I can see that that the part was there in the 1900's and not much before, it also looks like there was a smallpox hospital on the site.
