Standing sentinel over the picturesque Watermouth Bay in Devon, England, lies a round tower shrouded in a bit of mystery. Its origins and exact purpose remain debated, but its imposing presence on the headland overlooking the cove adds to the charm of the bay.

The tower, likely constructed sometime in the 19th century, is built with partially rendered stone rubble and lined internally with brick. Its imposing circular form rises roughly 4 meters tall, offering panoramic views of the coastline. A semi-circular arched doorway on the east side provided entry, while a rectangular window on the north side, with a chamfered timber surround, allowed for views out to sea.

The debate lies in the tower's function. Its most likely purpose was as a lookout tower associated with Watermouth Castle, located roughly 600 meters away. In the past, such towers would have been used to keep watch for approaching ships, potential invaders, or signs of smuggling activity.

However, an interesting wrinkle emerges from a 1765 map by Benjamin Donn. The map marks a "pleasure house" in the same location as the tower. This has led some to speculate that the tower might have had a more recreational purpose, perhaps serving as a scenic lookout point for leisurely pursuits.

Today, the round tower at Watermouth Bay stands as a Grade II Listed Building, recognized for its architectural and historical significance. The roof no longer survives, and time has weathered the structure, but its imposing form continues to capture the imagination.

Whether built for vigilant watch or leisurely enjoyment, the round tower at Watermouth Bay serves as a reminder of the area's rich history and its enduring beauty. The next time you find yourself exploring the South West Coastal Path and taking in the views of Watermouth Bay, be sure to spare a thought for this enigmatic landmark.
